Happy Cinco de Mayo!

One of my favorite days of the year – Cinco de Mayo – is nearly upon us, as is the culmination of Hiram Walker’s “Margarita Madness” cocktail competition! I’ve written previously of the contest, the third chapter of “The Quest” series, but it’s now time to mention it’s down to the final stretch.

For your chance to win an Apple iPad, you need only submit your favorite Margarita recipe to “The Quest” through the Hiram Walker website or Facebook page by this Saturday, el Cinco de Mayo! So break out the tequila, Hiram Walker Triple Sec and your other go-to Margarita ingredients  and get mixing these next two days; it’s really all the preparation you’ll need for your fiestas this weekend!

Perhaps there’s even a Mint Margarita waiting to be developed — combining the best of both Cinco de Mayo and Derby Day! 😉

Salud!

As I mentioned in my last blog post, the Margarita has morphed itself into a fun, flavorful and versatile cocktail, capable of taking on a variety of different flavor profiles. While Hiram Walker’s consumer cocktail contest, The Quest, marches forward with its “Margarita Madness” competition, I thought it appropriate to provide a few more Margarita recipes that may be the muse for your own unique cocktail creation. These recipes, and many more, can be found on Hiram Walker’s website:

MangoRita:

  • 1½ parts Premium Tequila
  • 1 part Hiram Walker® Mango Schnapps
  • ¼ part Hiram Walker® Triple Sec
  • ½ part Lime Juice

Shake or blend with ice into salt-rimmed margarita glass.

PeachRita:

  • 1½ parts Premium Tequila
  • 1 part Hiram Walker® Peach Schnapps
  • ¼ part Hiram Walker® Triple Sec
  • ½ part Lime Juice

Shake or blend with ice into salt-rimmed margarita glass.

If you are 21 years and older and would like to enter for a chance to win an Apple iPad®*, we encourage you to visit Hiram Walker on the web at www.HiramWalker.com or www.facebook.com/HiramWalkerUSA and upload a recipe to the Margarita Madness competition by May 5, 2012 (otherwise known as the greatest Margarita holiday of the year!). Peppermint for the Holidays

Hiram Walker Candy Cane cocktail

Peppermint is a ubiquitous, commonplace flavor associated with the winter holiday season. To get in the spirit of the season, I tried combining peppermint schnapps with another all-natural Hiram Walker flavor that remind me of  December – pomegranate schnapps.

Behold the Candy Cane Cocktail, an extremely mint-forward cocktail whose bright red color is reminiscent of holiday lights dangling from trees and rooftops. I garnished mine with a piece of peppermint brittle  because, well, the candy canes in my apartment seemed to mysteriously “disappear”…don’t you hate when that happens?! Here’s the recipe:

Candy Cane Martini

  • 1 part ABSOLUT® Vodka
  • 1½ parts Hiram Walker® Pomegranate Schnapps
  • 1½ parts Hiram Walker® Peppermint Schnapps
  • ¼ part Simple Syrup

Shake and strain into martini glass, garnish with mini candy cane or mint leaf.

But this drink is nowhere near my favorite expression of the uses for peppermint schnapps. My Cocktail Connection features a few of my favorite cocktails using Hiram Walker’s Peppermint Schnapps, such as the Peppermint Patty.  If you’re looking for a peppermint cocktail fix, that would be my preferred drink of choice.

Peppermint is also a great ingredient to use in a variety of hot beverage during the cold winter months. If you have a favorite Hot Drink that uses Peppermint Schnapps, or a selection of other Hiram Walker flavors, you can enter your drink to the Hot Drink contest of The Quest, Hiram Walker’s search for the country’s greatest cocktail recipes as submitted by consumers. For your chance to win one of two prizes, VISA gift cards valued at up to $500, enter your recipe on Hiram Walker’s website or Facebook page by December 31.

Cheers and enjoy what time remains of this holiday season!

Caramel Apple Macchiato

Going through my recipe database of hot drinks, coupled with the all-too-typical 2:00 afternoon lull, it has become increasingly prevalent that our office needs an espresso machine. After taking imagined espresso machine for a test spin, I’ve already picked out the first hot cocktail I’ll be mixing up. It’s the Caramel Apple Macchiato, which uses Hiram Walker’s seasonally apropos Caramel Apple Liqueur. Here’s the recipe:

Caramel Apple Macchiato:

  • 3/4 part Hiram Walker Caramel Apple Liqueur
  • Fill with hot espresso

Serve ingredients in an espresso cup and top with frothed milk.

This is just one of many examples of drinks that can be created and submitted by cocktail enthusiasts in the current cocktail contest for The Quest. In this segment of The Quest, the theme is “Hot Drinks” and entries can include any range of hot beverages (cider, coffee, espresso, hot chocolate) in a cocktail with Hiram Walker liqueurs, brandies and schnapps. You may have a chance to win one of two top prizes for your most outstanding of cocktails – Visa gift cards valued at up to $500. You can learn more and submit your drink by December 31st by visiting The Quest on the web or on Facebook.

In the interim, it’s time for me to make another cup o’ Joe. Go, go, caffeine rush!

Cheers!

Black Raspberry Truffle

Hiram Walker Black Raspberry Truffle

In case you missed my post yesterday with the press release announcement, Hiram Walker is preparing to launch a new consumer cocktail contest, the second in The Quest series, on December 1st. The theme this time around is “Hot Drinks” and serves as an ode to the simple ‘winter warmers’ we are likely to be enjoying this time of year.

With that introduction, do you need a little inspiration to come up with that winning Hot Drink recipe? Or just need a winter warmer for the chilly temperatures expected around the country tonight? My recommendation to get the creative juices flowing this evening is the Black Raspberry Truffle, a delightful dessert-inspired cocktail for the end of the evening. Here’s the recipe:

Black Raspberry Truffle

  • ¾ part Hiram Walker® Black Raspberry Liqueur
  • ¾ part Hiram Walker® Crème de Cacao
  • 4 parts Hot Coffee

Pour into a coffee mug and serve.

So now, without further ado, in my best Will Ferrell/Mugato impression: “Oh, that Hiram…so hot right now.”

Really, what more is there to say? 😉

Cheers!

How ‘Bout Them Apples?

October is National Apple Month and marks a fabulous time to test out that new bottle of Hiram Walker’s Caramel Apple Liqueur you’ve seen featured online and in your local retail stores.

Though this week has proven to be somewhat regarded as an Indian Summer here in Connecticut (please don’t let me have just jinxed it!!), I am finding a lot of uses for Hiram’s Caramel Apple Liqueur in what can be described as “fall-forward” cocktails. Photos and recipes will soon follow!

But don’t just take my word for it – the spirits reviewers as Tastings.com took a sip of Caramel Apple Liqueur and awarded it both a silver medal and a “Best Buy” distinction. Also, take a peek at what some other influential bloggers in the cocktail community are saying about this new liqueur:

  • Our friends at A History of Drinking simply state: “Definitely tastes like the name.”
  • Mutineer Magazine stirred up a signature Caramel Apple Liqueur cocktail that was “MUTINEER APPROVED!”
  • Over at Drinking in America, the team found Caramel Apple Liqueur to be a “perfect addition to autumn activities” – of note on their list of activities is bobbing for apples!!
  • Sporting a newly-redesigned website, Drinkhacker rates the “light and minimalist liqueur” from Hiram Walker
  • The rating system at Bob’s Brew and Liquor Reviews is pretty straightforward: Drink This “if you want a tasty, well-made, and not cloyingly sweet Caramel Apple Liqueur…”
  • Cocktails, 365 writes approvingly of the Caramel Apple Liqueur and offers several original cocktails, including the Turning Leaf Cider.

I’d love to hear what response you have had to trying the new Caramel Apple Liqueur. Leave me a comment or, if you feel your  cocktail recipe has the right stuff, enter your drink into Hiram Walker’s fall cocktail contest “The Quest” to be entered to win an Apple iPad.

Cheers!
