One Week To Go!

With one week to go until St. Patrick’s Day, it’s time to start planning what green beverages are going to be showing up at your festivities. While you could just buy some green cups and call it a day, where is the fun in that? There are lots of delicious green drinks for you to choose from (see my previous list of green cocktails from the other week here) but one of my favorite festive cocktails is the Irish Margarita:

  • 1.25 parts Jameson Irish Whiskey
  • .5 part Hiram Walker Triple Sec
  • 2 parts Margarita Mix
  • 1 part Water

Shake vigorously and strain into glass with ice.

Enjoy and Happy one week ’til St. Patrick’s Day!

Friday Feature Cocktail: The Galway Girl

Happy Friday and almost St. Patrick’s Day! The St. Pat’s drinks continue this week as we approach March 17. While I am unfortunately not from Galway, I can say that I have been there and it is just as gorgeous as you would imagine. While there, I got to see the flags of the fourteen Tribes of Galway in Eyre Square, and Joyce was one of them (that’s my last name for those of you that don’t know).  A Joyce was also the creator of the Claddagh Ring in Galway, so as far as I’m concerned my last name allows me to call myself a “Galway Girl” on St. Patrick’s Day 😉

My dad and I in Galway under the Joyce flag!

Shake and strain.

Hope you all have a safe and wonderful St. Patrick’s Day!

Friday Feature Cocktail: Irish Margarita

As I mentioned in my first St. Pat’s post, I want to share some fun and festive drinks that don’t include the ingredients: beer & green food coloring. Today’s featured cocktail puts an Irish spin on a classic party favorite:

Cocktails of an Irish Inspiration

St. Patrick’s Day is nearly upon us in 2010, with some holiday celebrations beginning as early as this weekend (I’m hoping to check out Hartford’s annual St. Patrick’s Day parade on Saturday — well, if the weather holds up). And while I’m a fan of St. Patty’s for the food (slow-roasted Corned Beef, anyone?) as much as the drinks, let’s talk about the drinks.

Lucky for you, here are a few recipes from Hiram Walker to bring out the bit of Irish in us all.

  • Irish Apple – It tastes super sweet, just like finding that pot o’ gold at the end of the rainbow: 1 part Jameson® Irish Whiskey, 1½ parts Hiram Walker® Sour Apple Schnapps, 5 parts Ginger Ale. Serve over ice in tall glass, and garnish with a lemon wedge.
  • Jameson Whirlaway – A tart treat: 2 parts Jameson® Irish Whiskey, 1 part Hiram Walker® White Peach Schnapps, dash of Bitters, splash of Club Soda. Mix all ingredients except Club Soda in a shaker with cracked ice. Pour into a tumbler and top with Club Soda.
  • Green Gobbler – This one turns green… no luck needed: ¾ part Hiram Walker® Pumpkin Spice, ¾ part ABSOLUT® Raspberri, ¾ part fresh sour mix (1 part each lemon & lime juices, 2 parts simple syrup), 1/8 part Hiram Walker® Blue Curacao. Combine ingredients 1-3 in shaker with ice. Shake vigorously. Strain into rocks glass and serve. A splash of Blue Curacao at the end sinks and turns green when you add it to the drink.

Have a fun holiday!

Drink O’ The Irish

the-ugly-leprechaunTop o’ the mornin’ to ya & Happy St. Patrick’s Day, readers. With a last name like Harrigan, you can bet I like to enjoy a few St. Patty’s Day cocktails with my corned beef & cabbage on March 17th.

Ok, so I’m not really Irish—the name’s Armenian actually, and was changed from Harrigian to Harrigan when my family arrived in America. But I feel, since I was taunted and tortured with the following song for the majority of my childhood, I should get to reap the benefits of an Irish-sounding last name:

After all, everybody’s got a little Irish in them on St. Patty’s Day. Get in touch with your Celtic roots with a few tasty (and green, of course) cocktails this eve. Cheers!

The Ugly Leprechaun

1 ½ oz. Vodka

½ oz. Jameson Irish Whiskey

½ oz. Hiram Walker Melon Liqueur

¼ oz. Fresh Lime Juice

½ oz. Simple Syrup

2 oz. Kiwi Puree

Lime wheel for garnish

Chill a large cocktail glass. Shake ingredients with ice in a shaker. Strain into chilled cocktail glass and garnish with a lime wheel.

Grasshopper

¾ oz. Cream

¾ oz. Hiram Walker Crème de Cacao, white

¾ oz. Hiram Walker Crème de Menthe, green

Pour the ingredients into a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake well. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass and garnish with chocolate cookie crumbs.

Irish Cooler

1 ½ oz. Absinthe

½ oz. Peppermint Schnapps

½ oz. Cream

Combine ingredients in a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Stir. Serve over ice in a rocks glass.
