Memorial Day is just around the corner, and I could not be happier. After a VERY snowy winter, and a spring that has left much to be desired, I am embracing the summer season with open arms. Memorial Day is the beginning of BBQ season and outdoor drinking, and I love to explore new recipes to share with family and friends during the holiday weekend.
One way to impress guests is by adding new products to old favorites. Sangrias and Punches are a good place to add in unexpected flavors such as Mama Walker’s new breakfast flavored liqueurs, including Blueberry Pancake or Maple Bacon.
Another way to get your friends and family excited about your cocktail offerings is to mix them into the dessert menu, because who doesn’t love dessert?
Malibu has recently released Malibu Sundae and Malibu Swirl, two dessert-flavored offerings that are perfect for satisfying your sweet tooth after the hot dogs, hamburgers and salads! According to the company release, “Malibu Sundae combines the brand’s signature coconut taste with the tempting flavor of chocolate ice cream while Malibu Swirl pairs the flavor of coconut with the delightful taste of strawberries and cream.” Find out more about Malibu’s new offerings at: www.malibu-rum.com
Another refreshing and sweet dessert cocktail is the adult spin on the summer favorite orange cream popsicle: The Whippsicle
Shake Hiram Walker Whipped Cream Liqueur and Vodka with ice. Strain into tall glass over ice. Top with club soda. Garnish with orange wheel.
It seems that no one was prepared for the “hiatus” (see most favorite posterous update, possibly ever) that was to strike yesterday afternoon when an earthquake rocked in Virginia and traveled all the way up the shoreline to New England. Not a cocktail recipe was to be found coyly playing off the theme, with the exception of this, ermmm, “gem” that my dear friend decided to tweet at me.
Now, with the impending showers and winds that Hurricane Irene is supposedly thwarting on the East Coast this weekend, the need to have a cocktail recipe on hand seems greater than ever. I resort back to last year’s post when Earl was threatening to hit land amidst my travel plans for a friend’s wedding (a layover through Charlotte, NC was the big hurdle at the time!).
Here’s one of the two drinks I featured before that seems fitting of repeat again this week, The Tidal Wave:
Tidal Wave (pictured above)
1 ½ parts Malibu Coconut
¾ parts Pineapple Juice
Splash of Hiram Walker Blue Curacao
Splash of Coconut Cream
Shake vigorously in a shaker and fine strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with a piece of pineapple.
My Summer State of Mind perfectly mixed all in one glass!
Without much explanation needed, here is my pick to best celebrate National Rum Day today, August 16.
It’s pretty simple, really: grab some of your favorite white rum, Hiram Walker’s Raspberry Schnapps, and a little lemon-lime fizz – you’re all set for a day of playing hooky and celebrating on the warm, sunlit beach!
Too idealistic? Perhaps an evening with one of these bad boys on the patio deck with the grill going in the backdrop is way to best enjoy this perfect summer cocktail. Here’s your recipe for the perfect Summer State of Mind:
Summer State of Mind:
Build first three ingredients over ice in a Collins glass and top with lemon-lime soda. Optional garnish with a lime peel.
In over two years of writing the Cocktail Culture blog, I have discovered an ungodly number of nationally and internationally recognized holidays that give reason to celebrating with a cocktail or two at home. What perhaps entertains me the most is, no matter the amount of background research and ‘googling’ and ‘wikipedia-hunting’ I embark on, the stories behind these designated days of celebration seems to go untold.
Tomorrow being National Rum Day seems to be no exception to this rule (though, if you have the inside story, please prove my Internet lurking wrong!). We won’t let that spoil the celebration – here’s one recipe to start the weekday festivities!
Shake all ingredients hard with ice and strain into a chilled martini glass. Garnish with a strawberry slice. (Recipe is for 2 servings)
Summertime in a bowl, ain't it?
Summer is officially open for the season and with that come a few of my favorite things in the great outdoors: laying in the sun by the pool or at the park, playing loads of tennis, or turning up the grill for some great seasonal grub (this weekend saw a collection of burgers and grilled asparagus and potatoes). That great grilling component is of course made more complete with the addition of a beverage or two!
I posted this White Peach Sangria recipe on my own Facebook page over the weekend and had some overwhelming positive responses from friends to serve this big bowl of summertime joy over the coming months. So while I may have missed the unofficial start to summer this weekend, there are plenty more quintessential outdoor celebrations still to come this summer – best yet, this recipe fits the bill for them all!
White Peach Sangria
Combine all the ingredients in a large punch bowl filled with PLENTY of ice.
