National Kahlúa Day

Nothing says National Kahlua Day better than a Kahlua on the Rocks. Fill a glass with ice, add Kahlua, stir and garnish with fresh orange zest.

We don’t need a reason to celebrate our favorite rum and coffee liqueur but we’ll take today as a sign from the liquor gods above to mix up a drink with Kahlúa.

Kahlúa can be simply enjoyed simply on the rocks stirred and topped with a bit of orange zest (trust me, you won’t want to skimp on it!), served in a shot, or mixed into a variety of cocktails and warm coffee beverages. I also simply enjoy adding Kahlúa with some homemade whipped cream (my boyfriend makes great whipped cream using Hiram Walker’s hazelnut liqueur!) to hot chocolate for a different dessert option. And, “upping the ante” a tad bit more, another warm Kahlúa beverage is the Monte Cristo, as featured below:

Monte Cristo:

  • ¾ oz. Kahlua
  • ¾ oz. Hiram Walker Triple Sec
  • 1 cup coffee
  • Whipped cream
  • Chocolate shavings
  • Orange zest

Rim a glass coffee mug with sugar. Add liqueurs and fill with hot coffee. Stir. Top with whipped cream, chocolate shavings, and orange zest.

National Hot Toddy Day – January 11th

A delectable Hot Cinn Apple Toddy, using bourbon and Hiram Walker Original Cinn

As I sit at my desk with the space heater purring at my feet, I can’t think of any fonder words to shout – Happy National Hot Toddy Day! Below are two of my favorite recipes that add a touch of liqueur to up the ante on the traditional flavor combination. I know I have featured them both en masse before, but I swear, you really can’t have too much of a good thing in this case.

Hot Cinn Apple Toddy:

  • 1 ½ parts bourbon
  • 1 ½ parts Hiram Walker Original Cinn Schnapps
  • ½ oz fresh squeezed lemon juice
  • 1 tsp agave nectar
  • Fill with hot apple cider
  • Green apple slice dipped in hot caramel or cinnamon stick for garnish

Pour the bourbon, schnapps, and lemon juice into an Irish coffee glass or mug. Stir well. Fill with hot apple cider. Garnish with the green apple or a cinnamon stick.

For a bit milder of an offering, try this version below. The Caramel Apple Liqueur, with its lower proof, supports the flavor of the hot apple cider without offering powerful alcohol taste.

Hot Apple Toddy:

  • 1 part Jameson Irish Whiskey
  • 1 part Hiram Walker Caramel Apple Liqueur
  • Fill with hot apple cider
  • Green apple slice or cinnamon stick for garnish

Build in a warm mug and fill with hot apple cider. Garnish with the green apple or a cinnamon stick.

What is your ideal Hot Toddy recipe?

Cheers and Keep Warm!

Peppermint for the Holidays

Hiram Walker Candy Cane cocktail

Peppermint is a ubiquitous, commonplace flavor associated with the winter holiday season. To get in the spirit of the season, I tried combining peppermint schnapps with another all-natural Hiram Walker flavor that remind me of  December – pomegranate schnapps.

Behold the Candy Cane Cocktail, an extremely mint-forward cocktail whose bright red color is reminiscent of holiday lights dangling from trees and rooftops. I garnished mine with a piece of peppermint brittle  because, well, the candy canes in my apartment seemed to mysteriously “disappear”…don’t you hate when that happens?! Here’s the recipe:

Candy Cane Martini

  • 1 part ABSOLUT® Vodka
  • 1½ parts Hiram Walker® Pomegranate Schnapps
  • 1½ parts Hiram Walker® Peppermint Schnapps
  • ¼ part Simple Syrup

Shake and strain into martini glass, garnish with mini candy cane or mint leaf.

But this drink is nowhere near my favorite expression of the uses for peppermint schnapps. My Cocktail Connection features a few of my favorite cocktails using Hiram Walker’s Peppermint Schnapps, such as the Peppermint Patty.  If you’re looking for a peppermint cocktail fix, that would be my preferred drink of choice.

Peppermint is also a great ingredient to use in a variety of hot beverage during the cold winter months. If you have a favorite Hot Drink that uses Peppermint Schnapps, or a selection of other Hiram Walker flavors, you can enter your drink to the Hot Drink contest of The Quest, Hiram Walker’s search for the country’s greatest cocktail recipes as submitted by consumers. For your chance to win one of two prizes, VISA gift cards valued at up to $500, enter your recipe on Hiram Walker’s website or Facebook page by December 31.

Cheers and enjoy what time remains of this holiday season!

Caramel Apple Macchiato

Going through my recipe database of hot drinks, coupled with the all-too-typical 2:00 afternoon lull, it has become increasingly prevalent that our office needs an espresso machine. After taking imagined espresso machine for a test spin, I’ve already picked out the first hot cocktail I’ll be mixing up. It’s the Caramel Apple Macchiato, which uses Hiram Walker’s seasonally apropos Caramel Apple Liqueur. Here’s the recipe:

Caramel Apple Macchiato:

  • 3/4 part Hiram Walker Caramel Apple Liqueur
  • Fill with hot espresso

Serve ingredients in an espresso cup and top with frothed milk.

This is just one of many examples of drinks that can be created and submitted by cocktail enthusiasts in the current cocktail contest for The Quest. In this segment of The Quest, the theme is “Hot Drinks” and entries can include any range of hot beverages (cider, coffee, espresso, hot chocolate) in a cocktail with Hiram Walker liqueurs, brandies and schnapps. You may have a chance to win one of two top prizes for your most outstanding of cocktails – Visa gift cards valued at up to $500. You can learn more and submit your drink by December 31st by visiting The Quest on the web or on Facebook.

In the interim, it’s time for me to make another cup o’ Joe. Go, go, caffeine rush!

Black Raspberry Truffle

Hiram Walker Black Raspberry Truffle

In case you missed my post yesterday with the press release announcement, Hiram Walker is preparing to launch a new consumer cocktail contest, the second in The Quest series, on December 1st. The theme this time around is “Hot Drinks” and serves as an ode to the simple ‘winter warmers’ we are likely to be enjoying this time of year.

With that introduction, do you need a little inspiration to come up with that winning Hot Drink recipe? Or just need a winter warmer for the chilly temperatures expected around the country tonight? My recommendation to get the creative juices flowing this evening is the Black Raspberry Truffle, a delightful dessert-inspired cocktail for the end of the evening. Here’s the recipe:

Black Raspberry Truffle

  • ¾ part Hiram Walker® Black Raspberry Liqueur
  • ¾ part Hiram Walker® Crème de Cacao
  • 4 parts Hot Coffee

Pour into a coffee mug and serve.

So now, without further ado, in my best Will Ferrell/Mugato impression: “Oh, that Hiram…so hot right now.”

Really, what more is there to say? 😉

How to ‘Spruce Up’ Hot Cocoa 101

A most festive backdrop in which to enjoy Hiram Walker's Peppermint Schnapps

The Facebook alert on my phone lit up about 11 pm EST. I had been tagged in a friend’s festive photograph – taken over 2500 miles apart –  of a Hiram Walker Peppermint Schnapps nip before his indulging in a peppermint hot chocolate.

And so my yearning began! After all, it is the season for peppermint schnapps and hot chocolate to join together for a delicious, warming treat. So for Friday’s Featured Cocktail to last you through the weekend, I thought I’d share a hot chocolate recipe easy to please the masses –  The Breath Mint Hot Chocolate!

Breath Mint Hot Chocolate

  • ¾ part Hiram Walker Peppermint Schnapps
  • ¾ part Kahlúa
  • 4 parts Hot Chocolate

Combine ingredients and serve in a coffee mug. Top with optional garnishes of fresh whipped cream, chocolate shavings, or peppermint candies.

Yup, it doesn’t get much simpler – nor tastier on a cold winter’s weekend – than that. But if you have other tasty variations, please feel free to share your recipes or links in the comments section and I’d be happy to share them in a future post!

Have a fantastic weekend!

He’s baaaack…

Yes, the wonder boy is back in action, starting promptly at 12:01 Friday morning, along with Ron, Hermione, and He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named. It’s the beginning of the end for the Harry Potter series of movies and, while I unfortunately don’t have tickets for tonight’s midnight showings, I’m giddy with excitement to see the new flick.

Every wizard needs his own boiling brew, so here’s a hot drink potion with warming cinnamon spices that even smarmy Professor Snape would stir up.

(Snape’s) Cinn and Pom Tea

  • 1 part Hiram Walker Original Cinn
  • 1 part pomegranate juice
  • 3 parts hot tea

Serve hot in a mug.

Alternately, you can chill the tea and build this drink in a Collins glass over ice. Simply refreshing!

Cheers to more movie and cocktail magic!
