It’s Friday and you know what that means – gotta get down on Friday. Just kidding.
But Friday does mean that the consistently inconsistent series Friday’s Feature Cocktail is back for your at-home entertaining this weekend!
So in anticipation of tomorrow’s National Root Beer Float holiday (because, really, what frozen beverage doesn’t deserve a holiday in the middle of summertime?!), I offer up Hiram Walker’s alcoholic offering on the diner classic Root Beer Float. Here’s the recipe:
Root Beer Float:
- 1 part Hiram Walker® Root Beer Schnapps
- 2 parts Milk or Cream
- 4 parts Cola
Combine ingredients in a blender with ice. Blend until smooth.
Do you have another variation on this drink that you make at home? I’d love to hear your recipe, too, so please feel free to leave me a comment below.
Have a great weekend, friends!
Citrus Peach Fuzz Cocktail from Hiram Walker
Preparing for Tales of the Cocktail makes a lot of traditional New Orleans drinks come to mind: Sazerac, Vieux Carre, and Pimm’s Cup (OK, well that’s if you’re a fan of the Napoleon House in NOLA, like I am!) are among the many that come to mind first.
Yet there is no drink that better embodies the spirit of Bourbon Street than the Hurricane. The rum-filled concoction served in the glass of the same name comes from the famous Pat O’Briens bar.
But this bears the question: What other types of drinks can be served in a Hurricane glass?
Here are a few suggestions served up from the Hiram Walker recipe database, but I would welcome more of your insightful cocktail recipes as well!
Blue Lagoon Cocktail
- ¼ part Hiram Walker® Blue Curacao
- 1 part ABSOLUT® Vodka
- 1 part Pineapple Juice
Blend with ice until smooth and serve in a hurricane glass.
Citrus Peach Fuzz
- 1 part ABSOLUT Citron® Vodka
- 1 part Hiram Walker® Peach Schnapps
- 1 part Cream
- Fresh Peach slices
Pour all ingredients into blender; cover with crushed ice and blend until smooth. Pour into a Hurricane glass and garnish with a fresh peach slice.

What a heavily inspired month to be a rum fan! We started the month off early with National Piña Colada Day and now today, July 19th, is National Daiquiri Day. I think a Tiki party is in due order somewhere…
But let’s not waste anymore time and get to planning our Daiquiri Day! While I’m all for the classic recipe (light rum, lime juice, simple syrup), there’s something that seems very ‘nostalgic’ to be about the frozen, blended kind on a day like today. So while Jay-Z keeps busy sippin’ on his Mai Tais, I’m gonna give this Frozen Strawberry Daiquiri the affection it deserves on this most distinguished of holidays.
Frozen Strawberry Daiquiri
2 oz Light rum
1/2 oz Hiram Walker Triple Sec
1 oz Lime juice
1/2 tsp Sugar
1 cup ice
Combine all ingredients in a blender until well mixed. Pour into a collins or hurricane glass and serve with a straw.
You know those old sayings that everyone told you while you were in college? Those “Enjoy it now, before it’s all over” kind of sayings? I wish I had paid more attention to them.
It’s been quite the action-packed year for me in the 13 months since earning my degree, but never has it hit me as hard as it is right now. You see, most of my friends here in Connecticut are graduate students. And, while I am not at all envious of the tiresome amounts of work they have day and day out, I am incredibly jealous of them all for one reason and one reason only: summer vacation.
So while all of my friends will be departing on cruises, visiting with family, or laying at the beach ON A WEDNESDAY, I get to work and make myself a cocktail (even though this recipe is portioned for two – don’t judge, enjoy responsibly). The Glitter Island cocktail is a frozen treat full of flavor reminiscent of those (long-gone) days of summer vacation. Get exotic with the garnish – pineapple is a good start, but think of adding ingredients such as kiwi, papaya, guava, mango or fruity sorbet.
Glitter Island (2 servings)
1 cup frozen sliced peaches – unsweetened
2 parts Malibu Island Melon Flavor Caribbean Rum
2 parts Hiram Walker Peach Flavored Schnapps
2½ parts Pineapple Juice
1½ parts Apricot Juice
Skewered Pineapple Garnish
Place all ingredients in blender except champagne and garnish. Blend until mixture is completely smooth. Divide between two decorative glasses. Top each glass with Brut Champagne. Garnish with skewered pineapple.
Who’s jealous of whom now?

I must apologize for the abrupt drop-off in posting this past week. I was on vacation in Maine and had some catching-up to do when I returned. There’s nothing like a beach vacation to get you thinking about summer cocktails. We’ve still got one good month left so why not give these a try at your final summer bash:
Blueberry Passion Mojito:
2 parts White Rum
2 parts Hiram Walker Blueberry Passion Schnapps
Juice of 1 large Lime
4-6 large mint leaves
Splash of Soda
Muddle the mint leaves in a Collins glass until the essence is released. Add ice to fill the glass. Add lime juice, Rum, and Schnapps. Pour into shaker and pour back into glass. Add two thin straws and garnish with a mint leaf.
Blushing White Peach Sangria:
1 part White Zinfandel
1 part Hiram Walker White Peach Schnapps
1 part Pineapple Juice (not from concentrate)
2 parts Lemon Lime Soda
2 Fresh Peach slices
4 Pineapple chunks
Fill a hurricane glass with ice. Pour ingredients as listed. Pour back and forth in shaker two times to mix and top with Lemon Lime Soda.
Mango Green Tea Frappe:
1 part Light Rum
2 parts Hiram Walker Mango Schnapps
¾ part Monin Green Tea Syrup
1 ¼ parts fresh Sweet & Sour mix
2 lemon squeezes
1 cup ice
Combine ingredients in a blender. Blend until smooth. Pour into a hurricane glass, garnish with a lemon corkscrew and mint sprig and serve.
What’s your favorite summer drink? Share it here & don’t be ashamed if it seems silly or simple. Who doesn’t love a nice, sickly-sweet frozen Pina Colada every now and then?
